Ok friends. I like to eat healthy. Scratch that. I LOVE eating healthy!!!
There’s lots of fresh, seasonal, local produce in my world. Colorful too! But I always want some fat in my food. The good kind. From oils or butters or nuts or other good, clean, yummy sources.
So I’ve found myself in one too many restaurants in LA, ordering something that sounds dreamily delicious on the menu only to get a meal sans fat. Very pretty plate, shaved rainbow veggies and seaweed galore, but not a single source of fat. Ok, mayyyyybeeee there’s like 3 sesame seeds on the rim of the plate. And then I become that girl that orders extra tahini dressing, 7 times over!
My thoughts go like this: no all butter or oils or so on are the same. And I like to put the good stuff in my body. Some fat with every single meal. Especially post surf/physical activity. And truth be told, I don’t eat a ton or snack during the day.
Cause of my whole I-live-in-chronic-pain situation (part of being 7 vertebrates down and a whole lotta hardware later) and my pain generally makes me nauseous (which cannabis really helps him!) but I simply don’t have the same appetite as I did pre-pain. Which means that, all the more so, when I do eat, I needa put some good fat in my little tiny body!
So there I was ordering at a very healthy restaurant. My previous restaurant experience was straight after a surf sesh and I was craving all the carbs. I was so stoked to get some ramen only to realize when I was eating it that I had totally kooked reading the menu and it wasn’t actual ramen but sweet potato shaped like ramen. Ummmmm… yummuy just not exactly what I was going for.
I was determined to get my carbs and I knew I wanted some good fat and all the rest could be healthy veggie deliciousness. Not a veggie shaped like a carb but an actual carb please.
I was worried about another pretty sans fat meal so I politely asked at the counter what the source of fat in the bowl I was ordering was. The question was met by a very confused look. Ummmm…. I don’t know was the response. Ok, great, I said, can you please ask in the kitchen? Someone’s gotta know what’s in the food you’re serving I figured. Is there some kind of oil in there or anything else with fat?
A few moments later a somewhat annoyed looking person from the kitchen came to talk to me to announce its not their practice provide the caloric breakdown of their food I was told.
I am very sorry for the misunderstanding I exclaimed! I think perhaps my question was misunderstood!
I’m looking for a hearty, nourishing meal with some fat in it. I just moved her and have ordered one too many dishes that sound delicious and have zero sources of fat in them I explained. And I actually want some fat in my food!!!
I don’t need to know the caloric breakdown! It’s not my practice to count that either!
I’m just wondering if you can pretty please tell me what the source of fat in that bowl is cause it sounds delicious and I def want to order it but I just wanna make sure I’m not gonna get a bowl of steamed veggies. I want a little fat in my food I kept rambling on… I always get nervous when I annoy kitchen folks.
They dude was confused! He understood but was like…. Whoa! No one has ever actually asked for fat in their food!
We need fat friends. Period.
The bowl had a teeny tiny bit of fat in the form of coconut oil…
Think I’ll still be that gal in Venice that orders the extra tahini dressing 7 times! I just want some good fat in my food pretty please!
